The Salmon River might be most known for its summertime adventure appeal, but don’t be fooled—early fall has just as many perks if you know where to look. In this guide, we’re sharing our recommendations of the best things to do on the Salmon River this upcoming Labor Day weekend, from private boat tours to whitewater rafting. Whether your ideal holiday is spent lounging in the sun on a white sand beach, hiking through scenic mountain landscapes, or a little bit of both, the Salmon River & Riggins area is about to become your new favorite Labor Day destination.
Why Visit the Salmon River for Labor Day Weekend?
Idaho’s outdoor recreation scene is at its peak in the summer months, when temperatures are warmest, river rapids are flowing, and the options for hiking trails are seemingly endless. But did you know that the Salmon River also makes for a great Labor Day weekend trip?
First of all, autumn tends to see fewer crowds than high tourist season on the Salmon. Yes, Labor Day weekend is on the very early end of fall, but you’re still likely to encounter much smaller crowds than if you were to visit in June, July, or August. This means having more of the river to yourselves, which is ideal especially for any time you’d like to spend visiting historic sites, hanging out on the beaches, or swimming in the water.
Visiting during this early September weekend also means you’ll get slightly cooler temperatures than the hottest summer months, but it won’t usually be too chilly just yet. You will definitely want to pack layers with you no matter what type of outdoor activities you’re doing—the mornings and evenings are crisp, even if it’s warm during the day.
Labor Day is a lovely time to visit the Salmon River if you’d like to avoid peak summer crowds and explore in slightly cooler temperatures!

What are the top guided fishing tours on the Salmon River during Labor Day weekend?
If steelhead fishing is your main priority when visiting the Salmon River, we actually wouldn’t recommend planning a trip for Labor Day weekend. While steelhead fishing is technically open in September, we don’t start taking on steelhead trips until mid-October because steelhead numbers are too low in September. Read our Full Guide to Steelhead Fishing on the Salmon River for more information about the best time of year to book your trip.

However, if you want to go bass or trout fishing, both our Summer Family Fun Trip and Summer Cooler Trip will have opportunities to do so. Any guest over the age of 14 who intends to fish will need to purchase an Idaho fishing license and have it with them on the boat. We provide bass and trout fishing rods and gear to make it easy. You are welcome to bring your own fishing gear as well.

What are recommended lodging options near the Salmon River for early September & Labor Day weekend?
There are plenty of lodging options near the Salmon River for your Labor Day weekend trip. Our favorites include:
- Salmon Rapids Lodge
- Salmon River Dome (our own off-grid glamping down on the Salmon, ideal for couples)
- The Building on the River
4 Fun Ways to Spend Labor Day Weekend on Idaho’s Salmon River
1. Kick back with a day out on the Salmon River
What better way to cool off from the Labor Day weekend heat than with time out on the water? This time of year typically sees daytime highs between 80-90°F in Riggins, which means it’s the perfect time for a Summer Cooler Trip: a private day out on the Salmon River for you and a group of loved ones, tailored fully to you and what you’d like to see, do, and experience. With only your group on the boat, you won’t need to worry about anyone else making the decisions—the day is yours to enjoy in private, and you can choose from a list of tons of fun river activities, including:
- Swimming
- Paddleboarding
- Beaching
- Jet boating big rapids
- Sightseeing
- Bass/trout fishing
- Wildlife viewing
Or, if you’d rather take the opportunity to kick back and relax with a chilled beer, admire the beautiful fall scenery of the Frank Church Wilderness, and enjoy this quality time with your friends and family, we’d call that a pretty great day too.
For families in need of a kid-friendly option, fear not: we’ve got just the trip for you. Our Summer Family Fun Trip is essentially the same as the above Summer Cooler Trip, but geared toward families with young children who want to experience the river—maybe even for the first time. Pack up your cooler, life vests (you’ll need to bring your own for kids under 4 years old), and we’ll head out to explore the scenic Salmon River canyon for the day. All of the same activities are available, from swimming to playing on the beach to sightseeing, so feel free to include as much leisure or adventure as you’d like.

No matter how you spend the day, this is one of those memories you will be able to look back on together for years to come: Remember that time we spent Labor Day weekend out on the Salmon River, where nothing mattered besides soaking in the sunshine, taking in the views, and being together as a family?
Don’t be surprised if you end up loving your experience so much that you end up coming back for more—it may even turn into your new favorite annual Labor Day tradition.
2. Enjoy some late-season whitewater rafting
If you thought whitewater rafting was purely a summer activity, think again. Labor Day weekend is actually a great time to go late-season rafting on the Salmon River. With lower water levels, you get more beach access and a slower-moving river that allows for a more gentle, relaxing pace.
Local companies like Wild River Adventures, Idaho River Adventures, and Yellow Jacket River Guides are all fantastic options for booking your whitewater adventure on the Salmon. There are a variety of ways to get out on the water depending on your level of experience and the type of adventure you’re seeking, from day trips that are great for families, to overnight getaways, to week-long wilderness adventures with a private group.
Everyone from beginners to rafting enthusiasts, families and individuals alike, can find a fun way to experience the rapids of the Salmon River during this prime early fall weekend in September!

3. Journey into the historic Frank Church Wilderness
Spanning nearly 2.4 million acres of west-central Idaho, the Frank Church Wilderness is easily the top draw of visitors to the Salmon River—and the perfect place to explore during your Labor Day trip. This “River of No Return” wilderness is a key part of the region’s history, originating as a place where miners would gather in search of gold back in the 1870s. The Salmon was also a place for Native American tribes to hunt and fish, including the Nez Perce and Mountain Shoshone tribes—and, if you’re lucky, you can still find remnants of their lives along the river, such as arrowheads uncovered by highwater or old teepee divots along the sand bars.
Sightseeing historic spots along the Salmon River is one of the most popular ways to spend our Scenic Jet Boat Tours. Depending on how you customize your itinerary and what you would like to fill your time with, we may stop at places such as:

- Polly Bemis Ranch
- Buckskin Bill Museum (which makes for a great ice cream stop on a warm September day, too.)
- Painter Mine
- Native American pictograph sites
- Reho Wolfe’s Cabin
For this tour, you’ll meet your boat captain and guide at the Vinegar Creek boat ramp, located 26 miles up the Salmon River Road from Riggins. From there, you’ll have the opportunity to experience the river corridor that has shaped Idaho’s history, with an itinerary tailored fully to your group. We’ll take you upriver for sightseeing and enjoying the scenery, and you simply tell us how you’d like to spend your time. This trip can accommodate groups of up to 8 people.

4. Explore the Seven Devils Mountains via Windy Saddle
Hiking enthusiasts will love exploring this area of Idaho in the early fall, as the nearby Seven Devils range offers incredible trails that are often clearer, cooler, and more colorful this time of year versus the summer. The Seven Devils Mountains are one of Riggins’ biggest attractions, with so many different ways to explore and truly immerse yourself in the vast Idaho wilderness. Labor Day weekend is an especially desirable time to hit the trails due to the reduced number of crowds compared to peak summer months, as well as temperatures that have started to cool—and are much more comfortable than the hot weather in July and August.

We recommend checking out Windy Saddle, which is the main entrance point into Hells Canyon from Idaho, as well as access to the Heaven’s Gate Lookout, which is the start of a trail system that goes into the Seven Devils range. Lower Cannon Lake is an example of a hike that is great to add to your itinerary in early September (able to be done in a day, or turned into a backpacking trip). Just be sure to monitor the weather before your trip, and watch for any early snowfall that may make trails inaccessible—especially if you’re planning to check out spots at higher elevations.
